Husband, father, lawyer, politician, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, feminist, friend extraordinaire, Robert Mitchell passed peacefully at home on November 18, 2016. Bob was former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice for the Province of Saskatchewan, Minister of Labour, Indian Affairs, Post-Secondary Education, Provincial Secretariat, as well as Chief FSIN Governance Negotiator, Chair of the Saskatchewan Public Complaints Commission, and National President of the Canadian Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement.

Born in Preeceville, Saskatchewan on March 29, 1936 to Charles and Beda Mitchell, Robert was raised on the cooperative farm near Sturgis. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with degrees in law and economics and practiced law for many years in Regina and Saskatoon. In the early 1970’s he worked in Ottawa as director of legal services in the departments of Labour and DREE. In 1973 Robert moved his family to the Caribbean where he served as ILO labour relations expert under the auspices of the United Nations. Ever a prairie boy, he returned to Saskatchewan and worked as deputy minister in the department of labour for five years, a time marked by significant progress for working people. In 1979 he and Don Ching established the Mitchell-Ching law firm in Saskatoon and in the early 1980’s Robert chaired the Key Lake board of inquiry and was subsequently appointed chief federal negotiator for Nunavit land claims.

He was proud to serve as Member of the Legislative Assembly for Saskatoon Fairview from 1986 to 1999. The early years were marked by a need to address the financial deficit that threatened to bring the Province to its knees. He and his colleagues were able to conquer that crisis and simultaneously move forward with important improvements for Saskatchewan people. He enjoyed political strategy and the thrust and cut of debate, but his real strength was to serve as a bridge-builder, a skilled negotiator, an honest and ethical public servant ever respectful of the views of others.

A lifetime member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan Robert was renowned as a champion of human rights, in particular women’s rights, Aboriginal rights, and the rights of working people. He believed everyone had a right to be treated with dignity and respect, and he was kind to all he met. He loved golf, football, hockey and baseball. Not a day went by that he didn’t read three newspapers – sport sections first!

Robert is survived by his loving wife Sandra; daughters Janet, Roberta, Stephanie, Shannon, Donna, and Alison; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters Donna, Sandra (Ken), and Judy; brother Derek (Adele); and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to A CELEBRATION OF ROBERT’S LIFE at Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4001 East Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to a charity of your choice in support of women.

Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery (306) 789-8850.

Saskatchewan has lost one of its heroes.
