<div itemprop="description">On the evening of Friday, February 24, 2017, Erwin Schmidt passed away as the result of a heart attack. <br><br>Erwin was predeceased by his parents, Otto and Emma; infant brother, Alfred; and father-in-law, Louis Gedo. <br><br>Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Helen; his daughter Raquel Schmidt (Dave Payne), and his son Trevor Schmidt, all of Calgary; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Gedo; brother-in-law, Alex Gedo; cousins Lucie and Alfred Klempner and Gus Kuhnke and their families; relatives in Germany; and friends. <br><br>Erwin was born in Poland on November 13, 1935. At the age of eight, he and his mother fled to Germany due to the war. There they were joined by his father. In 1951 the three emigrated to Saskatchewan. <br><br>As a draftsman, Erwin worked for Imperial Oil and then the Department of Highways for the Government of Saskatchewan, receiving commendation for his work ethic. He also worked at the casino at its various stages of development, enjoying the work and the people he met. <br><br>Erwin’s passion for soccer developed as a youth in Germany. He enjoyed many years as a member of the Regina Concordia Soccer Club. He often stated that because of his involvement in soccer he saw Canada from ocean to ocean as a player, coach, or manager. <br><br>As a member of the German Canadian Society Harmonie for most of his life, he was on the executive, participated in Mosaic, and helped with the bingo sessions. <br><br>Erwin loved and was greatly proud of Raquel and Trevor, reveling in their accomplishments. He felt Dave was a happy addition to the family. <br><br>Over the years Erwin and Helen enjoyed traveling to various parts of Canada, the USA, Europe, as well as to Singapore and Malaysia. <br><br>The family extends their special thanks and gratefulness to the 911 operator; the EMS responders; the doctors, nurses, and social worker of the Regina General Hospital Emergency Ward; and the coroner. Your calming and efficient manner, patient explanations, and your empathy during this shocking occurrence was a tremendous help. <br><br>A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. <br><br>In lieu of floral tributes in memory of Erwin, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Regina General Hospital, 1440 14th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 0W5 or the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301, 2550 – 12 Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1. <br><br>Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery (306) 789-8850.</div>
