Beryl Costain passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 in the Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, SK. <br><br>She was predeceased by her parents William J. Monckton in 1937 and Mary Ethel (Shane) Monckton in 1983; beloved Aunt Edith E. Shane in 1980; brother Roderick S. (Beverly) Monckton; nephew Shawn Monckton; and brother Vincent E. Monckton all of Regina. <br><br>Beryl is survived by her children D. Michael (Sandra) Costain of Regina, Melody (her favorite son-in-law Bob) Penrose of Watrous SK, Roderick (Angelina) Costain of Ottawa ON, and Dr. Willard (Pernilla) Costain of Ottawa ON; sister Mary Ethel (Bernie) Rodych of Saskatoon; and sister-in-law Arlene Monckton of Regina; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and the US. <br><br>She was a proud grandma to Andrew (Mandy), Sara (Scott) and Jessica Penrose, Leirin (Chris) Baerg, Matthew (Britney), Celia, Teagan Costain, Hannah and Petra Costain, and great-grandma to Kash and Beth Penrose, and Cooper Costain. <br><br>Beryl was born and raised in Regina, completed her schooling and went on to secretarial training there. <br><br>She then married Sam Costain and moved to Congress, SK, where they lived on the farm for a few years and started their family before moving into Assiniboia. <br><br>She worked at the Town Office for a short while and then for the rest of her career as the RCMP stenographer in Assiniboia, where she enjoyed her job immensely. She was especially proud to see the first female constable arrive at the Assiniboia detachment during her career. <br><br>After retirement, Beryl moved back to her hometown of Regina where she kept very busy with many different volunteering opportunities. For many years she found it especially rewarding working with the Sitter Service organization providing respite for families caring for elderly or sick family members at home. <br><br>Beryl didn’t talk a lot about her early life, being more interested in other people’s lives. It made her a great listener, and she was always willing to give advice if needed or just let you talk. <br><br>She will always be remembered by friends and family for – her sharp wit and teasing sense of humor – her incredible work ethic – her hearty laugh – love of old movies – her zest for debating current events (Trump won??!!! was the last short conversation we had about the news) – and her famous turkey dinners at Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving, with stuffing, gravy and mashed potatoes that will never be duplicated. <br><br>“My heart leaps up when I behold<br>A rainbow in the sky:<br>So was it when my life began;<br>So is it now I am a man;<br>So be it when I shall grow old,<br>Or let me die!<br>-William Wordsworth, 1807<br><br>At Beryl’s request, no funeral service will be held.
