It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gladys Delia Wees from bladder cancer at the age of 79 years. Gladys passed away surrounded by the love of her family.

She was predeceased by her husband John (1982); her parents Vera (Byrant) and Andrew Hill; children Adele and David Wees; grandchildren Adrianne and Emily Ottenbreit; and sister-in-law Lorette Hill.

Gladys is survived by her son Doug Wees; daughters Karen (Neil) Fahlman and Deb (Randy) Ottenbreit; grandchildren Andrea Fahlman (Graham), Tyler (Jessica) Fahlman, Ashlea (Andrew) Scherle, Eli and Avery Ottenbreit; and great grandchildren Elizabeth and John Fahlman, all of Regina, SK. Gladys (known as Sis) is also survived by her younger brothers Glenn (Joan) Hill of Chilliwack, BC and Lloyd (Marilyn) Hill of Grand Forks, BC.

Gladys was born and raised on a farm west of Manor, SK.

This is where her love of books began. She always had at least one on the go.

Gladys graduated from Teachers College in Moose Jaw. She taught school in Langbank and at a one room school house called Woodside. While teaching at Woodside, she boarded with the Wees family.

This is where she met the love of her life, John. They married on Gladys’ 21st birthday in 1956. Gladys and John had five children, two died in infancy. Gladys was active in her children’s lives and supported their love of music and dance. Sewing sequins on a costume required many a late nights.

In 1981, John and Gladys celebrated their 25th Anniversary with family and friends. John passed away in 1982 and Gladys has been on her own ever since. Gladys was a very independent lady. She had a long career in the accounting field with SaskPower, and told many stories of the good old days; particularly when they moved to the ‘new’ SaskPower building.

Gladys attended the University of Regina, Faculty of Extension, where she earned her Certificate in Administration.

Since her retirement in 1993, she has enjoyed being part of her grandchildren’s lives. Travel and exploring were part of her nature. She particularly enjoyed her many winters in Mexico. Even after her diagnoses of bladder cancer in December, she still had plans to visit Mexico one last time this spring.

Sadly, her illness progressed very quickly, not allowing her to put her feet in the white sand and turquoise sea of the Mayan Rivera again.

Gladys enjoyed reading, anything paper, she never quite got into ebooks (other than as a last resort on a trip after she had read everything in her suitcase full of novels). She loved her newspaper, with the crossword puzzle being the start of her day. The challenge of a ‘good’ crossword was with her until her last few days.

Gladys was always ready to sit down over a cup of coffee for a good visit – Saturday morning coffee won’t be the same. Her many stories will be missed. Gladys enjoyed current affairs and the discussions that ensued, sometimes just taking a differing opinion to create a good discussion.

Gladys’ family will always be grateful for the special and professional care provided by Dr. Joanne McLeod. Gladys felt so blessed having Joanne manage her care. We are also grateful to the staff at the Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital and at Regina Wascana Grace Hospice for their kind care and support.

At Gladys’ and the family’s request, donations in her memory may be made to Astonished!
