Betty Hilworth (nee Kuryluk)
June 29, 1928 - May 21, 2017
Elizabeth Hilworth (nee Kuryluk) of Regina, SK passed away May 21, 2017 in Regina, at age 88.
Betty was born in Stornoway SK on June 29, 1928 to Thomas and Katherine Kuryluk. The family moved to their farm in Yorkton, where Betty and her four siblings were raised.
Betty graduated from YCI, then worked at John Deere.
It was in Yorkton where Betty met her husband Merve. Married in 1949, they lived in Kindersley, SK, then in Melville, SK where they lived for 20 years, raising their three children.
Betty was active in Royal Purple. United Church Women, bridge club, and curling. The team she was on were Regional Champs and she travelled the province to bonspiels, winning many trophies.
As a stay-at-home mom Betty chauffeured her kids to their sports activities and events. When the kids were older, “Rexall Betty” worked as a pharmacy assistant at Hegan’s Rexall Drugs.
In 1975, the Hilworths moved to Regina where she worked at Simpsons Commercial Interiors and The Bay, then volunteered at Pasqua Hospital gift shop. Betty and Merve were avid Northgate Walkers where Betty made many treasured friendships. She loved weekday morning mall walks and socializing over coffee. The Walkers casino bus trips and events were enjoyed; as well as the casino every Saturday with her Walkers lady friends.
Betty didn’t like to stay at home and sure liked going out for coffee! She delighted in attending her grandchildren’s sporting and musical events and cherished summer family weekends at Good Spirit Lake.
Travel memories were trips with Merve abroad and domestically, mother-daughter trips and in recent years on her winter vacations in Arizona.
Proud of her Ukrainian heritage, she spoke Ukrainian and loved preparing traditional bread and foods in her kitchen. Her bread machine was always on! She will forever be remembered for her excellent baking skills - especially her famous cinnamon buns and dinner buns - we all loved Betty’s Buns!
Betty was predeceased by her husband Merve; her parents; sister Christine Winnitowy and brother Leslie Kuryluk of Yorkton.
Left to celebrate her life is daughter Deb (Jan) Alsen of Casa Grande, AZ; son Larry (Kathy) Hilworth of Yorkton; daughter Barb (Kevin) Soltys of Regina; cherished grandchildren Kyle and Dean Alsen, Brianna (Jason) Rogers, Jessica and Tommy Soltys; sister Marlene Lawby of Chilliwack BC; brother Merve (Dorothy) Kuryluk of Yorkton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at St. James United Church, 4506 Sherwood Drive, Regina, SK on Thursday May 25, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.
