<div itemprop="description">Allan died suddenly on Saturday, September 20, 2014 after a period of declining health. <br /><br />He is survived by his wife of 43 years and best friend, Dr. Diane Secoy Smith; his special cousin Barbara Smith of Cornwall, England; sister-in-law Susan Secoy [John Reiser] of Carson City, Nevada; brother-in-law Raymond Wilson [Jerri] of Columbus, Ohio; nieces Kate Boeve of Holland, Michigan, Sarah Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, and Gwen [Dan] Heyer of Columbus; and cousins Susan Rowe and Geoffrey Smith of Scarborough, England. His cats Blair and Sheba will miss his kind care. <br /><br />Allan was born in Hull, England on June 2, 1937 to Frank and Dorothy Smith [deceased] and educated there at the University of Liverpool [BSc, PhD]. After completing his doctorate in chemistry, he spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. <br /><br />He was then employed for several years at Imperial Chemical Industries in England before moving to Canada in 1967 to take a position at the Regina Research Station of Agriculture Canada. He remained there, working on the fate of herbicides in the environment, until his retirement in 1997. <br /><br />He was an active internationally known scientist, working with researchers in Canada, the USA, England, France, Germany and Sweden. His research earned him the DSC degree from Liverpool. <br /><br />In addition to his herbicide research, he was also interested in the history of agriculture, publishing a series of papers with Diane on early agriculture as well as the histories of the research stations at Regina and Indian Head. <br /><br />Following retirement, he was able to spend more time on his garden, orchids, reading and travel. <br /><br />On his instructions, there will be no funeral. Friends are invited to GATHER FOR TEA at the Regina Funeral Home, Highway #1 East on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 2:00 &ndash; 4:00 pm. <br /><br />Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Allan may be given to such agencies as the Regina Humane Society, P.O.
