Alice Nenson
July 21, 1941 - December 9, 2016
Alice passed away December 9, 2016, having fulfilled her purpose in life - "to love and be loved". In her last days, her room at Regina Wascana Grace Hospice was overflowing with her family and loved ones. She was happiest whenever they could all be together - her six children, spouses and nine grandchildren. All of them knew her unconditional love.
Alice was predeceased by her husband in February 2016, as well as her sisters, Flora Richenberger and Katherine Flamand.
Her eternal memory will be honoured by her children: Timothy of Regina, Douglas of Calgary, Garrett (Susan) of Winnipeg, Lisa (Greg), Brian, Patricia (Paul), all of Regina and by her grandchildren: Stephen, Adam, Gabrielle (Matthew), Zachary, Jessica, Erin, Mackenzie, Jacob and Lena; as well as her oldest sister Marie King of Regina.
Although family times in the Nenson home were crowded, loud and often chaotic, there was always room for more - extended family, good friends and special clergy. Hospitality was a gift Alice shared with everyone who came through her door. A cup of coffee was guaranteed. Maybe with a liqueur. And always there was something good to eat. Her baking - cakes, crepes, special Christmas cookies and especially her chocolate log roll - are something everyone close to her will remember. She decided a recipe book of “Nenson Family Favorites”, compiled in the past couple of months, would be her Christmas gift to her family. All of her children and grandchildren selected which of her recipes they wanted in the book. Her joy of cooking and culinary creativity were "hereditary", part of the Romanian Canadian heritage that she preserved throughout her life. Her mother and sisters were all great cooks, and she was not to be outdone.
The youngest of four daughters, Alice was born on July 21, 1941 in Limerick, Sask. to pioneers Nick and Vera Lipan. She was cute, strong-willed, and a little spoiled, according to a couple of her older sisters.
She was raised in the Romanian Orthodox Church. It was there, at the age of 18, Alice met Daniel (Danny) Nenson. The next year they were married. A decade later, Daniel was called into the priesthood and Alice became ever more involved with the church as Very Rev. Daniel Nenson served parishes in Assiniboia, Calgary, Dysart and Regina. Affectionately known as "Preoteasa" (the priest's wife) to members of the church, she served actively with the St. George Romanian Orthodox ladies auxiliary in Regina for many years.
Although she never quite mastered the Romanian language, her youngest daughter and then later her older daughter became part of Regina's Eminescu Romanian Dance Group and continued promoting the traditions, music and culture of Romania.
Alice also spent many summers as a cook, counsellor and care giver at the St. Nicholas Orthodox Camp in Fort Qu'Appelle, where all the young campers looked forward to gathering 'round the table for one of her meals.
Romania was one of a long list of places that she and Daniel travelled - sometimes with six children in tow and later as a couple. Their other travels took them to Spain, Japan, Jamaica, the Bahamas and several Canadian and U.S. destinations. A trip to Boston with "her girls" fulfilled a dream for Alice in later years.
After high school and secretarial school in Regina, she began 50 years of employment that spanned roles as a high school secretary, court stenographer, and legal assistant, with intermittent breaks to raise her family.
She joined the newsroom staff at the Leader-Post in the 1980s, compiling and writing events for the Lifestyles section and later worked for Hansard (the official recorder of the debates and proceedings of the Saskatchewan legislature).
By the time she retired, at age 70, she had begun her battle with Crohn's and rheumatoid arthritis - two painful diseases that threatened her body, but seldom her mood. When cancer became the next invader, she kept her resolve to be positive and keep fighting. "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength; loving someone deeply gives you courage". That defined Alice in her living, and in her dying.
